What to do when you have had water damage
I've had a water break! I've got water flooding into my home or business from outside! What do I do?

- Make sure that the area is safe to enter. Turn off breakers if safe to access and if necessary. Watch for slipping hazards. If water came up from a drain, treat as a bio hazard and wear protection until it is professionally assessed.
- Eliminate the source of water if possible
- Photograph the damaged areas so the insurance company has a record.
- Remove and secure small furniture and clothing from damage area.
- Place foil, plastic wrap, plastic furniture tabs, etc. under furniture legs to protect them.
- Call your insurance agent to report the damage.
- Call a certified restoration company for help (go to iicrc.org to locate one near you).
- A wet vacuum can be used to remove excess water on surface but do not depend on it for deep extraction.
Do Not:
- Run electrical equipment in damaged area.
- Adjust indoor temperature.
- Consume any food that came from an affected area.
- Use home fans to dry the wet area.
- Tear up carpet until it has been assessed by a professional restoration technician.
